Daisy, Daisy Give Me Your Answer, Do Dress
Next to a velveteen bowler hat that hints of rabbits, behins a crane handled umbrella, you find the dress. Slim, scattered in silken daisies and pollen beading, impossibly white, the peddler grins at you, before speaking softly,
“She was perched on the back of a bicycle, in Hyde park, and time might’ve stopped, but it might have gone backwards too.
“Are you off to church?” I asked, peeking at her tail-coated handle-barred chauffeur. Under the shadow of his brim, sharp black eyes, a sharp black nose, and sharper lips, curled in silent mirth.
“No way, Luv” she said, snapping flamingo gum, like a firework, flicking the baby’s breath veil over her shoulder. “We is off tuh The Rivah. You can come if you want to. You can witness”
I trailed behind Them, as we zigzagged over oak shaded paths, chatting about the next dragonfly convention, why gnomes can be a little too hard headed, and how to get around the tax levies at the Westminster Otherworld gate.
“This is us, Luv.” A sudden inlet, to the right of the path, ended our march. We swished out of sight, landing flush on a luxurious bank, facing the marsh.
Standing on the shore, taking in streams of sun, breathing watercress and turtleback smells, the ceremony commenced.
She did not speak again, but smiling, fanned the veil behind her, and I could see from this new angle, how her nose was just as curved and pointed as his.
They began to dance. Slow circles first, arms out, fingers just brushing, then faster, faster, into tighter revolutions.
Then at once, it was all wings and beaks, and birds. Two cranes one black, one white, gliding low around the marsh, dipping and dancing up the airstreams. They did that for awhile yet, till, vows completed, they rose in graceful tandem, skyward.
On the bank they left me favors, an old-fashioned blue bicycle, two small nests of feathers and fresh wedding clothes.”
