When Midsummer commences in certain dew dappled groves of the Black Forest, The Global Coalition of Fairy Godmothers converges to meet. The weaver ones, spinners of straw into gold, knitters of milk maidens into queens, the ones with spidery hands and restless fingers, sit in sewing clusters atop mossy boulders and smooth fallen trees gossiping and stitching charms. They speak and knot the enchantments into their work as the needles dip in and out, old magic, as old as two fig leaves sewn together. Messages of love emerge, a ribbon of truth for their eldest godchild who wishes to pass the BAR, an armband of bravery for the smallest child in their judo class. A kindness spell for nervous young men as they scan themselves in the mirror, a spell of blessed union for a wiser and willing second time bride. They are exactly what they seem to be, spells that are spelled, the power of spoken word, captured in silk, and stone. Sometimes their hands are so spidery and their stitches so quick there are extras, and because they are fairy godmothers, they love giving gifts.
